“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” Aristotle

Description

The course focuses on Creative Arts Therapy principles in Education and the acquisition of practical skills in Art Therapy for children and adolescents. It is addressed to: Psychologists, Mental Health Specialists, Kindergarten Teachers, Educators, Special Therapists, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Psychiatrists as well as the general public. The specific aims of the course are to discover the importance of children's artistic expression in their personal development (developmental, psycho-emotional, physical and spiritual content), the role of supporting materials and their properties in the artistic expression of children and the contribution of art therapy as an intervention in children and adolescents with various psychopathological issues. Our experts use Art as a bridge between the unconscious thoughts of a young person and their hidden relationship with the image. They provide solid theoretical background on psychology and psychopathology issues (Learning Difficulties, Separation Anxiety Disorders, Autism, Asperger Disorder, etc.) combined with established play methods and art therapy techniques. The theoretical part of the course is accompanied by experiential seminars. At the end of the course, participants receive “An INNOTOMIA Education Art Therapy Training Certificate” which certifies acquired knowledge of new techniques and methods. Attendees will find this a valuable asset for their new up-to-date professional identity. Furthermore trainee-educators and their students will broaden their cognitive and emotional horizon through the open dialogue between Psychology and Art.

Approach

Child Art Psychotherapy is a new form of treatment that enables children and adolescents to explore, understand and process feelings about their personal development as they are often more difficult to talk about. The psychotherapeutic method uses Art as a bridge between the unconscious thoughts of the child and their hidden relationship with images. Images are used for pictorial communication as a non-verbal language. It is now accepted that children can express their thoughts and feelings more easily when using drawings. Consequently, children are encouraged to express their feelings through works of art and therapists facilitate this procedure without affecting them. Participants will be taught a step-by-step implementation of a child's painting trace, which is a test of the personality and mental age of a child or teenager, through which the expert can interpret their feelings and thoughts.

Learning Outcomes

This educational intervention aims at highlighting the direct relevance of Art to Mental Health. Being aware of this "affinity" gives the stimulus to those who wish to deal with the therapeutic assets of Art to deepen into the psychological world of patients. Our aspiration is to raise participants’ awareness of the value of spontaneous artistic creation as a mean of emotional expression and communication between themselves and the group. Our objective is to train professional educators from different disciplines, providing them with the skills and competence necessary for production of educational materials and training tools which use the healing power of Art in various therapeutic contexts.
